Located at close proximity of Victoria Terminus, the entire building is a wonderful specimen of Indo Sarecenic architecture. Modeled on Golgombuj of Karnataka, it is a unique specimen of Indo-British architecture designed by John Begg, in the year 1902.
The entire building is made of mixture of black basalt stone, yellow kurla stone, and white stones from Dhrangdra. The building is made of 120,000 square feet, and there is a massive central hall which has its ceiling high up to the huge dome.

It has the postal index number 1. Besides coordinating with parcels, postal communications, and money orders, GPO MUMBAI issues stamps, prints new inland letterheads, and postcards. GPO Mumbai maintains a philately section for aficionados. The Mumbai GPO remains open from 9:00am in the morning to 8:00pm on weekdays, and from 10:00am to 5:30pm on Saturdays.
