Mumbai Horse Racing

Mumbai horse racing organized at the iconic Mahalaxmi race course is one of the prestigious annual sporting events in Mumbai. In fact it is the biggest horse racing event of India. This annual sporting event is spread across six months, from November to April. 

Two horse racing events are held each week during the course of these six months. Thursdays and Sundays are race days from November to March and Saturdays and Sundays in April.  All in all 35 to 40 horse racing events are organized in this six months calendar, however the most awaited racing event amongst all is obviously the Mumbai Derby.

Mumbai Derby, which is held on first Sunday of February, is the biggest horse racing event in Mumbai’s annual horse racing calendar. On this day Mahalaxmi race course stadium is completely full and entire atmosphere is charged up, as fans desperately vie for their favorite horse to win the race.This event also receives huge glamour quotient as it is attended by the who’s who of Mumbai’s social glitterati and receives wide coverage by the media too.

The Mahalaxmi Race Course, which is permanent & official home of Mumbai’s annual horse racing event, is itself one of the finest horse racing tracks in entire Asia. The testimony of Mahalaxmi race course’s superior infrastructure is vindicated by the fact that no less than Queen of England & King of Saudi Arabia have been honorable guest to this annual event and have showered rich praises & tributes to this event.

The entire Management of Mahalaxmi Race Course & the annual horse racing event is managed by Royal Western India Turf Club LTD (RWITC). RWITC is one of the oldest and today is one of the best horse racing clubs of India.

Membership for RWITC is available in different categories and is open to all Indian citizens from all walks of life. The only criteria for betting is that you’ve to be 18 years old or above.  The immense lush greenery around the race course attracts hordes of health freaks from nearby localities every morning, who come here for healthy jogging and morning walk. However, during important racing days including derby day it is closed for common people.

All in all, the annual Mumbai horse racing event is one of the most sought after event of Mumbai’s annual sporting calendar. Although it may not attract hordes of fans like much beloved sports like cricket does, but nonetheless has its own charm and certainly takes immense pride in being one of the premium horse racing events of the country.
