Mumbai Cricket Assocation

Mumbai Cricket Association or MCA is the sole governing body for cricket administration in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane district. MCA is affiliated and permanent member of Board of Control for Cricket in India or BCCI. Its primary responsibility is to organize premier cricket tournaments across city jurisdiction and help groom cricketing talents. MCA has been given sole right to manage many public grounds across Mumbai and also has many coaches & umpires at its service for fulfilling its cricketing responsibilities and duties.

While there are many cricket associations across India who have been assigned same responsibilities as MCA, but Mumbai Cricket Association is by far the most powerful cricket association in India. The proof of how powerful and influential it is is simply vindicated by the fact that headquarters of BCCI is located inside the premise of MCA’s office. And of course one simply cannot afford to overlook MCA’s rich contribution to Indian cricket. After all, during its 83 years of illustrious administration it has given 68 test & ODI players to Indian cricket. Amongst them include the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ajit Wadekar and of course very own master blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

It also bears the responsibility of looking after two most prominent cricket stadiums of our country: Wankhede Stadium and Brabourne Stadium. Amongst these two Wankhede stadium is the most prominent one and has hosted dozens of test as well as ODI matches. The idea of iconic and world class Wankhede stadium was laid by late S.K Wankhede, who is also credited for setting up Navi Mumbai Sports Association, which today is one of the premier sports coaching institution of the country.

As for management of MCA is concerned, it has a very democratic set up and is managed by a managing committee which is duly elected after every two years by general body compromising of 350 member clubs. The managing committee is headed by President, who is responsible for taking all the decisions after taking all the members of managing committee into confidence.

MCA’s post of President is indeed very coveted one, as MCA is one of the most powerful sporting institutions in the country. No less then former Chief Ministers of Maharashtra and Cabinet Ministers in Government of India have contested for MCA’s President Post. In fact, the current president of MCA is Mr Sharad Pawar, who is currently Cabinet Minister for Agriculture in the Government of India and is also one of the most powerful politicians in the country.
