Aravind eye Hospital was established as a seven bedded eye care hospital in 1976 by a dynamic personality named Dr. G. Venkataswamy. Most of us know him as Dr. V, who started the hospital with his team of four medical professionals. The hospital was established by Dr V. after his retirement at the age of 58. He started a non-profit organization, The Govel trust under which Aravind eye Hospital was established to serve millions of patients suffering from any type of eye disorders. Dr. V's family has supported him fully for the establishment of hospital.

The hospital was started in his brother's home in Madurai. In which six beds were available for patients to give them treatment free of cost as they couldn't afford to pay while the rest five were paid. The name of hospital, Aravind was done in honour of Sri Aurobindo, the great spiritual leader of 20th century.

The ophthalmological hospital specialized in eye care services and is located all across India with its  various location in Madurai, Pondicherry, Theni, Tirupur, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Salem, Tuticorin , Udumalaipet and Dindigul. All these locations comprise a total of 4000 beds available for the treatment of patients suffering from varied eye disorders.

The journey of Aravind hospital started from 11 bedded systems and now it has reached 400 beds available in India. The team of experienced, professionals eye specialist have successfully completed approximately 4 million eye surgeries at the very reasonable price and sometimes even free of cost. Thirty two millions patients have been treated at the Aravind eye care hospital.

The hospital has been started with an aim to supplement government and as a self-supportive body to provide the best eye care service in India. With the growing population health needs has also grown and Aravind hospital has been established with the mission to accomplish the growing healthcare demand of population to provide a better vision society.

In 2012, 2,838,689 outpatients visited hospital and 349,274 surgeries have been performed. On an average Aravind team of medical professional has performed 2,000 operations every year. The hospital provides free of cost treatment to patients who cannot afford to pay.

To help the needy person in rural areas the hospital has established a Vision Centres. It has been estimated that Aravind eye care Hospital has done around 7 % eye surgeries out of the total surgeries performed all across the world and has acquired the highest position in conducting eye surgeries in the World. Along with the eye surgery facility, the hospital has also built an on-site lens manufacturing establishment in co-operation with the American entrepreneur David Green. The establishment has been named as Aurolab which provide lenses at the cheap prices as low as $2. At the present scenario Aurolab has produced 1.8 million lenses and available to patient at the most affordable prices. Aurolab has enhanced the number of patients visit at the Aravind Eye care Hospital.

Aravind eye hospital has also launched Aravind Managed Eye Care Services to serve each part of the county with eye care facilities. Under this service two hospitals in Uttar Pradesh and one hospital in both West Bengal and Gujarat have established. The Eye Care Centre is established in Lucknow is in collaboration with the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust to provide international quality eye care service.

The hospital is a boon for the poor section of society, who cannot afford to pay a huge amount of prices involved in eye surgery. The hospital has been established to help people, who belong to the poor section of society.

AEH has set benchmark in medical eye surgery and has won prestigious award, the $1 million Gates Award in 2008 for Global Health organized by Melinda Gates foundation. The hospital provides the state-of-art medical facility. In 1982, hospital was accredited to offer diploma in ophthalmology and MS in ophthalmology in 1986. Since 1988, Aravind Eye Hospital started offering fellowship program in ophthalmology. A dedicated research department has also been developed at the Aravind eye Care centre to enhance both clinical and basic research practices.
