Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra is the gateway to modern India. It has a vibrating and pulsating life. A confluence of varied cultural currents and cross currents has given Mumbai a unique position in the group of multi-ethnic cities of the world. The city, formerly known as Bombay lies in the Konkan coast of western India. Oozing with the cocksure self-confidence of a maverick moneymaker and "Bindass" (carefree) attitude, it boosts as the financial and commercial hub of the country and has a principal port on the Arabian Sea. The people of Mumbai are referred as Mumbaikars. Many live a fast-paced life with very little time for social activities. The cosmopolitan residents prefer to live with peace. They share their emotions among each other during festivals and special occasions. Mumbai's architecture is a blend of florid Gothic styles, characteristic of the 18th and 19th centuries, and contemporary designs. The city has a number of museums, libraries, literary and other cultural institutions, art galleries, and theatres and perhaps no other city in India can boast of such a high degree of variety and quality in its cultural and entertainment facilities. The natural beauty of Mumbai is unsurpassed by that of any city in the region. The entrance into the harbour from the sea discloses a magnificent panorama framed by the Western Ghats (mountains) on the mainland. Mumbai boasts the largest Film industry in the world, which is called Bollywood; it churns out more than hundred films every year. Mumbai is a perfect mélange of different communities. Shattered many a times by terrorist attacks, yet the city of Mumbai holds the magnanimous attraction that could ignite your curiosity to know the city all about. The view of the city from Marine Drive could remind you a glimpse of New York’s Man Hatton. It has groomed business tycoons including the Ambanis, writers like Shobha Dey, painters like MF Hussain in one part and in another microscopic minor slum dweller under its soft wings. As a generous patron of all types of talent, the city comfortably has accommodated a galaxy of silver screen stars on her lap. Originally, Mumbai was a group of seven islands which has been linked through successive reclamations. The earliest inhabitants of these low-lying swampy mud-flats were the Kolis (fisher folk). The patron Goddess of Kolis was Mumbadevi and the metropolis derives the name of Mumbai (Previously known as Bombay) on the name of Mumbadevi. Today, the energetic Mumbai has indeed come a long way from the Portuguese Bombay. The city nurtures a true cosmopolitan outlook and reflects unusual diversity in all its forms. As the home of the world’s largest film industry, it is constantly redefining fashion and style. Mumbai offers its visitors a multitude of natural tourists spot, historical monuments, wonderful shopping arcades, entertainment, night clubs, discotheques, splendid museums and art galleries and many more dazzling attractions. The tapori (Mumbai colloquial) languages, the bindas avatar, the local train, the vadapav, the koli fisherwoman all are just the representatives of Mumbai’s unique identity. Thus the city popularly known as “Maya Nagari” obliges a stranger to revisit the place again and again. Glimpses of Mumbai: ![]() | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
