The administration of Mumbai is under the control of Municipal Corporation (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) commonly known as BMC. The corporation is headed by the Mayor who enjoys few executive powers. However, the executive powers are hold by the Municipal Commissioner who is an IAS officer appointed by the state government. The Municipal Corporation of Mumbai is divided into twenty three wards which are administered by an Assistant Municipal Commissioner. The major responsibility of BMC is to provide civic and infrastructural facilities to the citizens.

The administration of the two revenue districts in Mumbai is looked by the Collector of each district separately. Looking after the property records, revenue collection and peaceful organization of elections are few responsibilities of the district collectors.

As far as flow of proper law and order in the city is concerned. Mumbai is divided into seven police zones and seventeen traffic police zones, which are headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police. However, the Police Commissioner who is an IAS officer is the head of the police department. The department of Mumbai police comes under the control of Ministry of Home Affairs.

For the settlement of judicial matters the office of Mumbai High Court is located at Mumbai where the disputes from the state of Maharashtra, Goa and Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadar Nagar Havelli are filed. Apart, from this there are two lower courts namely civil court and session court to look after the criminal matters. The special TADA court i.e, the court of Terrorist and Disruptive Activities is also located at Mumbai to look after the cases of the persons who are indulged in activities of spreading terror activities in the city.
