Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) or the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) is the civic body that governs the city of Mumbai. It was incepted under Bombay Municipal Corporation Act 1888. It is responsible for administering and providing basic infrastructure to the city, and suburbs. A quinquennial election is held to elect the corporaters to the power.  The Mayor heads the party with largest vote. The BMC is responsible for maintenance of roads, streets, flyovers, public municipal schools,  water supply and purification, hospitals, street lighting, maintenance of parks and open local spaces, sewage treatment and disposal, garbage disposal, street cleanliness, aiding in prevention of epidemic outbreaks through mass production of medicines at the Haffkine Institute,  cemeteries and crematoriums registering of births and deaths and lighthouses.
