Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra is the gateway to modern India.The most populous city in India and the second largest most populous city in world.It is lies on the west coast of India with deep natural harbour.Originally Mumbai is a group of seven islands of the Konkan coastline which has been constitute together to form the great Mumbai city district along with the Mumbai suburban districts makes the successful metropolitan of India.
It is also known as "Global city" an important node point in Global Economic system and has a direct and tangible effect on global affairs through its socio-economic importance.It is the richest city of India too with highest GDP growth boosts as the financial and commercial hub of the country and has a principal port on the Arabian Sea.
Formly the city was known as "Bombay" but the english name was officially changed to "Mumbai" in November 1996.The name derived from Mumba or MahaAmba the name of the Koli goddess Mumbadevi and Aai, "mother" in Marathi.The earliest inhabitants of these low-lying mud flats were the Kolis and Mumbadevi is the patron Goddess of Kolis.
It is also the commercial and entertainment capital of India,houses the largest Film industry in the world, which is called Bollywood.It has a vibrating and pulsating life.An influence of varied cultural currents and cross currents has given Mumbai a unique position in the group of multi-ethnic cities of the world.
Mumbai's architecture is a blend of florid Gothic styles, characteristic of the 18th and 19th centuries, and contemporary designs. The city has a number of museums, libraries, literary and other cultural institutions, art galleries, and theatres and perhaps no other city in India can boast of such a high degree of variety and quality in its cultural and entertainment facilities.Mumbai is a perfect mélange of different communities.
