Milestones in the History of Mumbai

Mumbai the combination of tradition and westernization also known as the commercial and economical hub of India has witnessed various historical events since its foundation. To name few some important events are listed below:

  1. 300 BC — Under the control of Maurya empire Great Ashoka
  1. 900 to 1300 — Dominance of rulers from Silhara dynasty.
  1. 1343 — Dominance of Sultan of GujaratPart of the Gujarat sultanate.
  1. 1431 – Construction of Haji Ali DargahHaji Ali Dargah built.
  1. 1534 —Portuguese captured Mumbai from Muslim rulers
  1. 1670 — First printing press was brought by Parsi Businessman Bhimji Parikh
  1. 1675 — The temple of Mumba Devi constructed Goddess of Kolis community of fisherman.
  1. 1777 — Rustom Kersaspjee published the first news paper from Bombay
  1. 1822 — Publication of India’s oldest news paper Mumbai Samachar started by Fardunjee Marzban.
  1. 1853 — First train in India ran  Bombay to Thane.
  1. 1854 — Establishment of First Cotton Mill
  1. 1857 — University of Bombay established.
  1. 1870 — Formation of Bombay Port Trust
  1. 1872 — Foundation of  Bombay Municipal Corporation
  1. 1885 — Foundation of Indian National Congress
  1. 1893 — Riots between Hindus and Muslims.
  1. 1896 — Two natural calamities famine and plague hits Bombay at same time
  1. 1911 — Gateway of India was built in honour of King George V and Queen Mary on their visit to Bombay.
  1. 1915 —  Mahatam Gandhi returns to India from South Africa at Mumbai.
  1. 1932 — J. R. D. Tata Business tycoon alone flew from Karachi to Bombay via Ahmedabad
  1. 1960 - Bombay declared as the capital of  Maharashtra.
  1. 31 March 1964 — Last tram made its journey from Bori Bundar to Dadar.
  1. December 1992 - January 1993 — More than 2000 Hindu-Muslim killed as the result of communal riots taken place after the destruction of Babri Masjid
  1. 1993 — Serial bomb blasts shattered  Bombay
  1. 1995 — Bombay renamed as  Mumbai
  1. 1996 - Victoria Terminus being renamed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus after      the 17th century Marathi King Shivaji
  1. 2002 – Bomb explosion placed under the seat of BEST bus near Ghatkopar Station. Two people were killed and 28 injured.
  1. 2003 – Bomb exploded near Vile Parle station.
  1. 2003 – Two blasts South Mumbai one near the Gateway of India and the other at Zaveri Bazaar in Kalbadevi .
  1. 2005 – Mumbai faced heavy rains Mumbai was lashed by torrential rains on 26–27 July 2005, during which the city was brought to a complete still.
  1. 2006 – Seven bomb blasts in series within the period of 11 minutes
  1. 2008 - Activists of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) under Raj Thakeray started attacking to residents north India living in Mumbai
